Workforce Development
Recently there has been a growth of learning opportunities in the workplace. The
service has provided courses for employees at several local companies including
Bombardier, Toyota, Midland Mainline and local schools.

There are also opportunities for Derby City Council employees to benefit from
this initiative. Employees have joined courses to achieve the National Test in
Literacy and Numeracy. This qualification is the equivalent level to GCSE which
has provided an opportunity to progress into further and higher education.
Employees at the Council House are attending classes in Spanish and Arabic in
the training room after work. There have been a variety of ICT courses,
some of which are custom made for the specific requirements of a departmental
team and others lead to recognised qualifications such as ECDL (European
Computer Driving Licence).

The high quality of teaching has been recognised by award of an 'A' grade by the
British Computer Society annually for the past 4 years. Later this year, the
new ICT qualification 'ITQ' the National Vocational Qualification for IT Users
which demonstrates staff competence in the use of IT in the workplace will be
available ruth.mable@derbyals.org.
