Apprenticeships for those aged 16 and over – what are they?

Apprenticeships are work based training programmes designed to give you, as an Apprentice, valuable work experience whilst earning a wage. The Apprentice will gain job-specific skills to meet their employer’s needs and will work alongside an experienced member of staff who will be their mentor to gain the relevant experience and skills. The Apprentice will also attend a study programme, usually one day per week, to gain related and a nationally recognised qualification.

Derby Adult Learning Service offer Apprenticeship Programmes in the following areas at Intermediate and Advanced Levels

Are you an Employer in the Derby / Derbyshire area interested in taking on an Apprentice?
Do you need to train new staff and/or existing staff in a new role?
If so, then read on...

Give your business a boost by hiring an Apprentice. With an Apprentice you can enhance your workforce and introduce a fresh perspective to your business.

The Apprenticeship Programmes are designed around the needs of employers. They give your employees the skills required to carry out their job competently and efficiently. You can use apprenticeships to train new employees but also existing ones who are moving into a new or changed job role and need to learn new skills. Funding is available to train apprentices.

Apprenticeships have been designed to be relevant for each occupational area and at Derby Adult Learning Service we will advertise, shortlist, interview and put forward suitable candidates for you to recruit the apprentice most appropriate for your organisation.

How do Apprenticeships work?

Derby Adult Learning Service Apprenticeship Programmes involves on the job training, with an Assessor/Tutor visiting the Apprentice employee at work, and off the job training. For the off the job training element, employees will attend classes at a Derby Adult Learning Service Centre (depending on previous skills and qualifications).

Can the employer get help towards the cost of training?

Apprenticeship funding is available from the National Apprenticeship Service. The size of the contribution varies, depending on your sector and the age of the candidate. If the apprentice is aged 16–18 years old, there will be 100 per cent funding available to cover the cost of the training. If the apprentice is 19-23 years old, the funding will only cover up to 50 per cent of the training cost. For anybody aged 24 years old or over you or the individual apprentice may have to pay for the entirety of the training. Please see below: 19+ Learning Loans.

Funding contributions from the National Apprenticeship Service are paid directly to the Adult Learning Service as the training provider.

If you are recruiting a new apprentice you will need to ensure that you are paying them at least the National Minimum Wage for apprentices, which is currently £3.40 per hour (for apprentices under 19).  From April 2017, this increases to £3.50 per hour.

If you are training an existing member of staff, you will pay them their usual salary.

19+ Learning Loans

From August 2013 apprentices aged 19 or above on an Apprenticeship (L3 or L4) will no longer attract Government funding. It is expected that employers will continue to make a contribution towards the training costs of the apprenticeship, with the remaining costs being met by the individual, who may be eligible to receive a 19+ Learning Loan. AGE Grant

If you are a small business (fewer than 50 employees) you may be able to access a grant of £1,500 if you take on an apprentice aged 16-24. For further information go to https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/apprenticeship-grant-employer-fact-sheet
