Course Summary

This course will look at the wine regions of the Old World (Europe!).

For every country we’ll study the grape varieties & regions in which they’re grown – to include viticulture and winemaking practice, and the factors that influence quality, price and style.

During the following sessions we will taste /evaluate 4-5 wines and record tasting notes. Sometimes there will also be a ‘mystery’ wine to identify!!

Sessions

1. Background – The vineyard year

2. Winemaking – different styles

3. France – Champagne, Burgundy & Alsace

4. France – Bordeaux & Bergerac

5. France – The Rhône & Loire valley

6. Italy – Piedmont, Veneto & Friuli

7. Italy – Tuscany, Umbria & the South

8. Germany & Alsace

9. Portugal & Madeira

10. Spain – including Cava & fortified wine

Does the course lead to a qualification?

No, it doesn’t lead to a qualification but you will have informal assessments to monitor your progress

Who is the course for?

For anybody with an interest in wine. Some background knowledge useful but not essential

What do I need to bring?

Bring six wine tasting glasses.  We taste between 4 to 6 wines each session.

(You can order a set of 6 tasting glasses from the Tutor)

Note paper/ pen

Are there any additional costs?

The additional wine cost is approximately £4 - £5 per week.

(You can order a set of 6 tasting glasses from the Tutor))

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?

Feedback will be given, both verbally and by the evaluation of completed tasks & projects.  You will receive verbal feedback on the results of your practical exercises.

There is no formal exam, although there is continual evaluation throughout the course.

Towards the end of each session you will use a DerbyLearn forum to record what you have done in class and comment on how you think you got on.  Before the next session your tutor will reply with their feedback.  This is a very good method of recording your own progress, reflecting on the session and a great way to receive motivation from your tutor.

Can I have help in the class?

If you would like to enrol on this course but think you need help in the class you  support can be accessed through the Learning Partners Scheme. The scheme matches learners who need additional help with a volunteer to attend the class together.
