Course Information

What will I be learning? 

There are 3 components to the course

  1. Speaking, listening and communication:
    1. Take full part in formal and informal discussions and exchanges that include unfamiliar subjects Make relevant and extended contributions to discussions, allowing for and responding to others’ input
    2.  Present information/points of view clearly and in appropriate language
  2. Reading:
  3. Identify the main points and ideas and how they are presented in a variety of texts
  4. Read and understand texts in detail
  5. Utilise information contained in texts
  6. Identify suitable responses to
  7. Write a range of texts to communicate information, ideas and opinions, using formats and styles suitable for their purpose and audience.
  8. Write clearly and coherently, including an appropriate level of detail
  9. Present information in a logical sequence
  10. Use correct grammar, including correct and consistent use of tense
  11. Ensure written work includes generally accurate punctuation and spelling and that meaning is clear in more than one type of text.

 Yes, English Functional Skills Level 1 or 2

Who is the course for? 

The course is suitable for both young people and mature learners who wish to be recognised for their achievement of a wide range of practical English skills for use in every day life.

The qualification is also suitable for those preparing to progress to English GCSE

What do I need to bring?

 Writing materials – ie Notebook and pens

Are there any additional costs?

 You will need to buy basic stationery (i.e folders for work and writing materials)  You will also need an English dictionary.

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?

Feedback will be given, both verbally and by the evaluation of completed tasks & projects.  You will receive verbal feedback on the results of your practical exercises.

Towards the end of each session you will use a DerbyLearn forum to record what you have done in class and comment on how you think you got on.  Before the next session your tutor will reply with their feedback.  This is a very good method of recording your own progress, reflecting on the session and a great way to receive motivation from your tutor.

 Learner Support

If you need support to learn, for example, a communicator, large print, personal care, specific equipment, or extra time, let us know. We will work with you to identify what you need and how we can best support you.

Learner Support Fund

If you are struggling to pay your exam fees or have a disability and need help to pay for transport to the course, we may be able to help you. Ask the centre staff or your tutor for more information and an application form. We have a small fund available to help learners who are experiencing genuine hardship. You are advised to apply as soon as you can.
