Course Information

What will I be learning?

• To speak basic language in limited predictable situations

• To be understood by a sympathetic native speaker

• Some basic grammar which underpins the language

• To read and write the language

• Customs, traditions and culture

An example of topics included in the course:

• Greetings and introductions

• Ordering a meal

• Shopping for basics

• Finding the way (directions)

• Personal details

Alongside to the above, the course will give you the opportunity to learn about Italian Culture, Art, Cuisine, Local and National Festivals and Italian Lifestyle.

Does the course lead to a qualification?

No, it doesn’t lead to a qualification but you will have informal assessments to monitor your progress.

Who is the course for?

The course is for anyone interested in getting a basic understanding of the Italian language and culture – you won’t need any prior knowledge of the language.

What do I need to bring?

For your first lesson, bring:

lined paper, a pen (black or blue), pencil and eraser. If you have an A4 sized ring binder, this will be useful too.

Are there any additional costs?

No additional costs.

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?

Feedback will be given, both verbally and by the evaluation of completed tasks & projects. You will receive verbal feedback on the results of your practical exercises. There is no formal exam, although there is continual evaluation throughout the course.

Towards the end of each session you will use a DerbyLearn forum to record what you have done in class and comment on how you think you got on. Before the next session your tutor will reply with their feedback. This is a very good method of recording your own progress, reflecting on the session and a great way to receive motivation from your tutor.

Can I have help in the class?

If you would like to enrol on this course but think you will need some help in the class you could have support through the Learning Partners Scheme. The scheme matches learners who need additional help with a volunteer to attend the class together. Volunteers can help with confidence, practical tasks such as cutting or measuring, reading and taking notes or communicating with the tutor and other learners.
