Course Information

Who is the course for?

This course is for those who can cope with a range of everyday situations and now wish to learn in little more detail how the language works.

This course is for those who have studied the language for three years or have some experience of using the language in the present, simple past and future tenses (have successfully completed an Intermediate course - Level 2 or equivalent)

The course aims to consolidate past learning and to extend the practical use of the language.

What will I be learning?

By the end of the course, you should be able to converse simply but accurately on a variety of everyday topics, read and understand a variety of short texts and write messages and short letters.

During this course you will:

  • Consolidate and extend the language learnt in previous years
  • Be introduced to a wider range of tenses
  • Be encouraged to develop greater accuracy and confidence in conversational skills
  • Also explore cultures who use the language

Learning Resources

  • Set book and CD or Cassette tape (your tutor will advise you about this in class)

Your tutor may provide:

  • Authentic materials such as menus, timetables, photos etc.
  • Handouts
  • Video or DVD
  • Internet (optional)

What can I expect to be doing in classes?

As a group, you will be able to decide which topics you would like to cover. Your tutor will help you identify your individual needs, support, encourage and guide you to practise and further develop in all language areas.

You will be:

  • Working in a group to learn new vocabulary
  • Creating and participating in written and verbal dialogues and discussions
  • Participating in games and quizzes
  • Reading fiction and non-fiction
  • Writing formal and informal correspondence and reviews or reports
  • Listening to dialogues / monologues
  • Watching video or DVDs or television extracts
  • Mnemonic strategies (learning how to improve memory skills)
  • Learning about cultures who speak the language

How will my progress be measured?

Your tutor will:

  • assess you informally in class and give you immediate verbal feedback
  • Assess your work formally and give you both verbal and written feedback

  • You will be encouraged to keep a ‘diary’ of your experiences and consider your confidence, achievements and preferred learning styles
  • Accredited courses will be awarded with a certificate upon successful completion of the course requirements (your tutor will tell you more about this)

Is there an exam?

There is no exam for ‘Intermediate +’ courses.

You will be expected to complete a series of exercises in class which will be assessed by your tutor.  These exercises are designed to measure your speaking and listening skills as well as your reading and writing skills.

What materials will I need?

For your first lesson, bring:

  • lined paper, a biro (black or blue), pencil and eraser.  If you have an A4 sized ring binder, this will be useful too.

Your tutor will advise you on which set books to buy and the recommended dictionary for the course, so don’t rush out and buy anything especially beforehand. You will also be advised of any other equipment you may need.

Do I need any prior knowledge?

  • You will be expected to have a good command of the English language (although this need not be your first language) but no formal qualifications are required.
  • You will also need to have successfully completed either a course in the chosen language at Level 2 or equivalent or have knowledge of the language through prior studies or experience.

What happens if I miss a few lessons?

If you miss the odd lesson during the course, you will be issued with the missed handouts (you may be able to download them from the internet) and you will be given advice on what home study you should do to enable you to keep up.

What happens if I don’t complete the course?

If for some reason, you are unable to complete the course, you must inform either the tutor or the administrators in the office.

Unfortunately we can only refund fees for the remaining weeks of the course if you notify us before the start of the third class that you will not be continuing.

Please note, refunds, if awarded, may take up to 6 weeks to process if you paid via cheque or cash.
