British Sign Language – Level 1 Award – 50 hours

What will I be learning?

This course is for learners who wish to work towards Signature Level 1 in British sign language to enable them to converse at a basic level with people who are deaf Sign language users.

Does the course lead to a qualification?

Understand and use a limited range of everyday phrases in BSL

 Take part in simple conversations in BSL

 Give and understand simple directions in BSL

 Give and understand simple descriptions in BSL

 To achieve the full Certificate in Level 1 BSL, learners must pass all 3 unit assessments:-

  •   BSL 101 - Introduction to British Sign Language
  •   BSL 102 - Conversational British Sign Language – Family, Pets, Hobbies, Home or Weather
  •   BSL 103 - Communicate in British Sign Language about Everyday Life

Assessment dates will be fixed and may be different to your regular class day and time.

Who is the course for?

This course is for those who have knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL) and want to acquire basic competence and confidence in two skill areas of production and reception of BSL.

Learners must have achieved Entry Level 3 British Sign Language before attending the Level 1 British Sign Language course. You will need to attend an assessment before you can enrol.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring a pen to complete the enrolment forms. Bring a Ring Binder Folder to collect the handouts.

Are there any additional costs?

Assessments fee is £90 for 3 unit assessments (to be confirmed)

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?

Continuous and regular assessments in the course with feedbacks and reviews from your tutor.

What support services are there?

Learner Support

If you need support to learn, for example, a communicator, large print, personal care, specific equipment, or extra time, let us know.  We will work with you to identify what you need and how we can best support you.

Learner Support Fund

If you are struggling to pay your exam fees or have a disability and need help to pay for transport to the course, we may be able to help you.   Ask the centre staff or your tutor for more information and an application form.  We have a small fund available to help learners who are experiencing genuine hardship. You are advised to apply as soon as you can.

From the city centre head towards Kedleston Road along King Street and Garden Street. At the 'Five Lamps' traffic lights on Garden Street you will see a sign for the Rycote Centre, turn left down Parker Street then turn right and the Centre is on the right hand side, parking is on the street and the main entrance is through the Social Service's car park. The Centre can also be accessed from Kedleston Road - opposite the Polish Club - but there is no parking at this entrance other than on Kedleston Road 01332 717930 or 717924
