Course Information

What will I be learning?

This is an eight week practical course for learners who have attended at least one previous silversmithing course at Landau Forte College; covering the workshop induction including health and safety procedures regarding the equipment, tools and materials used in the workshop.

The aim of this course is to extend your previous knowledge of jewellery making. There will be the opportunity to work on Individual negotiated projects to develop your own ideas or work on a set project given by the tutor as desired. There will be the chance to learn stone setting and other more advanced techniques alongside investigating a design concept or particular technique further.

A technical record will be required covering all the methods used to produce your pieces of jewellery. Support material such as tool suppliers will be given via DerbyLearn and in the workshop. Design development will be encouraged alongside awareness of historical and contemporary practice

Does the course lead to a qualification?

No, it doesn’t lead to a qualification but you will have informal assessments to monitor your progress.

Who is the course for?

Intermediate and advanced learners wishing to develop their own jewellery practice.

What do I need to bring?

Apron to protect clothes, hair ties for long hair, goggles and sturdy footwear. Also a notebook pen and pencil. The following tools if you already have them: Steel ruler and compass. Pliers, needle files, tin snips and end cutters.

Are there any additional costs?

Learners will mainly provide their own materials for this course.

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?

Feedback will be given, both verbally and by the evaluation of completed tasks & projects. There is no formal exam, although there is continual evaluation throughout the course.

This is a practical course and you will be able to see the progression of your ideas and technical skills through the making process.

Can I have help in the class?

If you would like to enrol on this course but think you will need some help in the class you could have support through the Learning Partners Scheme. The scheme matches learners who need additional help with a volunteer to attend the class together. Volunteers can help with confidence, practical tasks such as cutting or measuring, reading and taking notes or communicating with the tutor and other learners.

If you would like more information about the scheme please contact Pat Ward 642308
