City and Guilds Level 1 Certificate

Who is the course for?

  • People who are passionate about textiles and would like to experiment with new techniques
  • People who would to learn the creative process from concept to design and making to finished product

What do I need to bring?

  • A lever arch file
  • 100 plastic pockets
  • 100 x 1cm round stickers
  • pen, ruler, an assortment of pencils and colouring materials
  • glue stick
  • paper scissors
  • fabric scissors
  • embroidery hand sewing needles
  • tapestry needles
  • 2 metres of calico
  • A4 spiral bound sketchbook

 Please ensure you bring your folder, sewing kit and spectacles to every session, if you do not it will slow down your progress.

Are there any additional costs?

 Exam/accreditation fees - £51.10

Allow £100 for materials, your tutor will advise you what you need and when. Some materials you will be able to buy from the Tutor at cost price. You may also find you already have suitable materials and equipment at home.

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?

Feedback will be given, both verbally and by the evaluation of completed tasks & projects.  You will receive verbal feedback on the results of your practical exercises.

There is no formal exam, although there is continual evaluation throughout the course.

Towards the end of each session you will use a written Individual Learning Plan to record what you have done in class and comment on how you think you got on.  Before the next session your tutor will write your feedback.  This is a very good method of recording your own progress, reflecting on the session and a great way to receive motivation from your tutor.

From the city centre head towards Kedleston Road along King Street and Garden Street. At the 'Five Lamps' traffic lights on Garden Street you will see a sign for the Rycote Centre, turn left down Parker Street then turn right and the Centre is on the right hand side, parking is on the street and the main entrance is through the Social Service's car park. The Centre can also be accessed from Kedleston Road - opposite the Polish Club - but there is no parking at this entrance other than on Kedleston Road 01332 717930 or 717924
