Enrolment
I missed enrolment week, can I still join a course?
If you miss the Information and Enrolment week you may still be able to join the course of your choice.
To avoid disappointment you are advised to contact the centre where the course is running to check availability of places.

Learning Centres
I have booked on a course but do not know where to go
The details of where your course is held can be found on this website in the details section of your chosen course.
Once you have identified the course's learning venue, you can use the Learning Centres Map available under the venues / centres section of this website showing all locations of the service's adult learning centres.
You can use the map to view the whereabouts of a specific adult learning centre as well as navigate to and indeed plan your route to a specific centre. Contact details of all learning centres is also available.

Certificates
Who do I contact regarding the certificate from last year?
You will need to contact the centre where you completed the course. However if the centre was a School, please be aware that Schools are only open during term time.

How do I find out if my certificate is available to collect?

Do I need to collect my certificate from the centre?
Yes you would normally have to come to the centre to collect your certificate. You can arrange collection of your certificate at any of our other centres.
However, if you have left the area and cannot collect your certificate from us, we maybe able to post the certificate out to you.

I have a holiday planned and will therefore miss a couple of sessions, is that ok?
Yes, however we will be unable to refund you for the classes you miss. If your holiday plans are for more than 3 weeks, please talk to your tutor.

You can choose a course from one of our learning areas or use the advanced search feature to find a course based on specific criteria you are looking for.

This will be my first language course, will it be suitable for me?
Foreign Language courses - The tutor will carry out an assessment on your first day of attendance. This is to understand which level is suitable for you to start your language course.
ESOL & Literacy courses - You will need to book onto an Introduction course before we can enrol you onto an ESOL or Literacy course. An Introduction course assesses your level of English and your overall commitment. You will then be placed onto the appropriate level of course.

Can I speak to someone about which course would suit me best and enrolment dates?
If you would like to contact our helpline we have experiance staff to help you. The helpline could arrange for an information and advice worker to contact you or the tutor of the course to contact you direct.

Fees and Reductions
I have enrolled but now found out that there is an exam fee
This information is included in the course information sheet. The tutor will talk to you about any additional costs to your course fees. This will be completed at your first session.

Do you offer any discount to those on Jobseekers Allowance?
You can see information on fees and reductions. Please bring evidence if you are claiming fee reductions. We will need this at the start of your course.

Can you pay on a weekly basis or must I pay all in one go?
Course fees must be paid at the beginning of the course. If the course fee is over £100 you can be paid in three instalments. However the first instalment must be £100.

Is it at all possible that I could get a refund?
If your class is closed, we will try to find another one for you. You will get a refund if this is not possible. If you are not satisfied with your course, please let us know within the first three weeks and you will receive a refund. We will not normally refund fees after the first three weeks.

Does the fee need to be paid in full before the course starts?
Course fees must be paid at the beginning of the course. Learners who have not paid the appropriate course fee will be asked to leave the class unless they are entitled to fee remission.

I don't understand the different fee ratings (categories A, B and C)?
Fee Discounts and Concessions for Accredited Courses
Course numbers starting with LR
Category A
Full Fee
Category B
Learners who can provide evidence to show that they meet the following criteria will receive either a 100% or 50% fee reduction depending on the type of course
There will be no charge for those in receipt of:
- Jobseeker's Allowance
- Employment Support Allowance (Work Related Activity Group Only)
Also:
- Learners who are aged 19-24 and studying their first Full Level 3 Qualification (applies to courses starting with LR only)
- Learners joining an Entry or Level 1 course who do not already have a Full Level 2 qualification (applies to courses starting with LR only)
Declaration form to be completed
Learners on British Sign Language (BSL) courses who are deaf or live in the same household as a deaf person
Category B does not apply to courses beginning FC & SF
Accreditation Skills for Life Basic English and Maths courses are free for everyone
16-18 year olds can only enrol where course number starts with LR. They will receive full fee remission

Category B
Learners who can provide evidence to show that they meet the following criteria will receive 50% fee reduction depending on the type of course
Those in receipt of:
- Jobseeker's Allowance
- Employment and Support Allowance (Work Related Activity Group Only)
- Income-based benefits, i.e. Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit, Income Support
- Working Tax Credit with a household income of less than £16,190
- Pensions Credit Guarantee
- The unwaged dependants of those listed above
- Asylum seekers eligible for SFA funding and in receipt of the equivalent of income-based benefit (assistance under the terms of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999)
Also:
- Learners on British Sign Language (BSL) or Makaton courses who live in the same household as a BSL or Makaton user who are deaf or live in the same household
- Learners who are hard of hearing on a Lip Reading Course
Category C
Learners who can provide evidence to show that they meet the following criteria will receive a 10% reduction on courses with a course number that starts with a "P". This does not apply if learners receive a discount in Category B.
- Derbyshire Gold Card holders
- Adults who have attended a Derby City Council Family Learning course in 2010/11

How do I make a complaint?
