Enrolment

I missed the start of the course, can I still join a course?

 

If you miss the first session you may still be able to join the course of your choice.

To avoid disappointment you are advised to contact the centre where the course is running to check availability of places.

Learning Centres

I have booked on a course but do not know where to go

 

The details of where your course is held can be found on this website in the details section of your chosen course.

Once you have identified the course's learning venue, you can use the Learning Centres Map available under the venues / centres section of this website showing all locations of the service's adult learning centres.

You can use the map to view the whereabouts of a specific adult learning centre as well as navigate to and indeed plan your route to a specific centre. Contact details of all learning centres is also available.

Certificates

Who do I contact regarding the certificate from last year?

 

You will need to contact the centre where you completed the course. However if the centre was a School, please be aware that Schools are only open during term time.

How do I find out if my certificate is available to collect?

Do I need to collect my certificate from the centre?

 

Yes you would normally have to come to the centre to collect your certificate. You can arrange collection of your certificate at any of our other centres.
 
However, if you have left the area and cannot collect your certificate from us, we maybe able to post the certificate out to you.

I have a holiday planned and will therefore miss a couple of sessions, is that ok?

 

Yes, however we will be unable to refund you for the classes you miss. If your holiday plans are for more than 3 weeks, please talk to your tutor.

Could I please have some more details about the course?

 

You can choose a course from one of our learning areas or use the advanced search feature to find a course based on specific criteria you are looking for.

This will be my first language course, will it be suitable for me?

 

Foreign Language courses - The tutor will carry out an assessment on your first day of attendance. This is to understand which level is suitable for you to start your language course.
 
ESOL & English courses - You will need to book onto an Introduction course before we can enrol you onto an ESOL or English course. An Introduction course assesses your level of English and your overall commitment. You will then be placed onto the appropriate level of course.

Can I speak to someone about which course would suit me best and enrolment dates?

 

If you would like to contact our helpline we have experienced staff to help you. The helpline could arrange for an information and advice worker to contact you or the tutor of the course to contact you direct.

Fees and Reductions

I have enrolled but now found out that there is an exam fee

 

This information is included in the course information sheet. The tutor will talk to you about any additional costs to your course fees. This will be completed at your first session.

Do you offer any discount to those on Jobseekers Allowance?

 

You can see information on fees and reductions. Please bring evidence if you are claiming fee reductions. We will need this at the start of your course.

Can you pay on a weekly basis or must I pay all in one go?

 

Course fees must be paid at the beginning of the course. If the course fee is over £100 you can pay in three instalments. However the first instalment must be a minimum of £100.

Is it at all possible that I could get a refund?

 

If your class is closed, we will try to find another one for you. You will get a refund if this is not possible. If you are not satisfied with your course, please let us know within the first three weeks and you will receive a refund. We will not normally refund fees after the first three weeks.

Does the fee need to be paid in full before the course starts?

 

Course fees must be paid at the beginning of the course. Learners who have not paid the appropriate course fee will be asked to leave the class unless they are entitled to fee remission.

I don't understand the different fee ratings (categories A, B and C)?

Fee Discounts and Concessions for Accredited Courses

Course numbers starting with LR, LE and LD

Accreditation or Examination fees are not included in the course fee.
Details will be given at the first session

Category A = Full fee

Category B = FREE if you are actively seeking work and in receipt of 

Also free if you are an unwaged dependent of someone in receipt of Working Tax Credit and you are actively seeking employment.

  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (including Jobseeker's Allowance National Insurance credit)
  • Employment Support Allowance (Work Related Activity Group only)
  • Income Support, Council Tax and Housing Benefit
  • Pension Guarantee Credit and unemployed
  • Universal Credit and in a work group (work-related requirement, work preparation or work-focused interview) organised by JCP and earn less than £330 per month (excl courses starting with LX).

Also free tuiti​on fees for

  • Learners who are aged 19-23 and  joining an Entry or Level 1 Course who do not already have a Full Level 2 qualification (applies to courses starting with LR only) - Declaration form to be completed
  • Learners who are aged 19-23 and joining a Full Level 2 Course who do not already have a Full Level 2 Qualification or above (applies to courses starting with LR only) - Declaration form to be completed
  • Learners who are aged 19-23 and studying their first Full Level 3 Qualification (applies to courses starting with LR only) - Declaration form to be completed
  • Learners on a British Sign Language (BSL) Entry or Level 1 course or Makaton or Lipreading course who are deaf or live in the same household as a deaf person.

Accredited English and maths courses are free for everyone except GCSE A* - C retakes.

Course numbers starting with XX

There is no fee remission on courses starting with XX.

Fee Discounts and Concessions for Non Accredited Courses

All of the courses starting with CZ are FREE 'try me' taster sessions.

All of the courses starting with CP are day courses and are not subject to any discounts.

Course numbers starting with CG, CS and CT

Category A = Full fee

Category B = half price if you are in receipt of:

Jobseeker’s Allowance (including Jobseeker's Allowance National Insurance credit)

  • Employment Support Allowance (Work Related Activity Group only)
  • Income Support, Council Tax and Housing Benefit
  • Pension Guarantee Credit.

    Also half price if you are an unwaged dependent of someone in receipt of Working Tax Credit and you are actively seeking employment.

Also:

  • British Sign Language (BSL) Entry and Level 1 courses are free to deaf learners or to those living in the same household as a BSL user
  • Makaton courses are free to those living in the same household as a Makaton user
  • Lip reading courses are free to those who are hard of hearing.

Category C

Upon evidence of their Derbyshire Gold Card, learners will receive a 10% reduction on courses with a course number that starts with 'CG’ or 'CS' or 'CT'. This does not apply if learners receive a discount in Category B.

How do I make a complaint?
