Who is this course for

This course is designed for anyone who would like to start a GCSE English Language course in September.  The content will help to prepare you to study the GCSE course by introducing key topics and addressing any skills gaps.

What are the entry requirements

This course will be most suitable for those who have recently completed a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification or have a GCSE English grade 3, grade D or equivalent.
Initial assessment will be included in the course.

Please note:
You must attend all classes and arrive to classes on time; failure to do this may result in removing you from class.

What will I be learning

Together with your tutor, you will decide which learning areas you need to work on to meet your individual skills gaps.  There will be a focus on the underpinning skills needed to succeed at GCSE level, but will likely include:

Becoming confident in reading, analysing, and evaluating 19th and 20th century fiction texts.

Confidently identifying language and structural features that have the most impact in texts.

Be able to synthesise texts; to choose the most relevant pieces of information from the texts to discuss its effect on the reader.

Identify evidence as to how well a writer is putting across their point and explain why this piece of evidence is successful at doing so.

How will I be assessed and supported

At DALS, we use an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set and review targets and provide feedback, enabling continual reflection and evaluation throughout the course. You will also receive verbal and/or written feedback on marked work. You will use your ILP to help track and monitor your own progress towards set goals, to support your personal development and achievement.

At enrolment, it is important that you tell us if you have a learning difficulty or disability and require support. If you declare a support need, you will be referred for an assessment. If an enhanced support need is confirmed, a Support Package will be offered, to assist your progress in your learning and development, specific to your assessed needs.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring a notepad, pen and proof of identification.
