Who is this course for

Level 1 Award in British Sign Language can be taken without any previous BSL experience. This qualification allows learners to gain basic skills and
confidence in understanding BSL as well as producing it.

What are the entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course.

What will I be learning

This qualification is designed to teach learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use.

They will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL. There will be 65 guided learning hours in the classroom. The qualification specification has been designed using the UK Occupational LanguageStandards 2010 at Level 1.

How will I be assessed and supported

This course leads to a qualification after successful completion of three units.
BSL 101 Introduction to BSL
BSL 102 Conversational BSL
BSL 103 Communicate in BSL about Everyday Life.
The tutor reserves the right to determine whether the candidate has reached competency standards which includes having sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.
Learners must be available for the exam dates.
Unit 101 on Wednesday 15th February 2023
Unit 102 on Wednesday 10th May 2023
Unit 103 on Wednesday 14th June 2023

A ring binder for notes and handouts

Any additional costs?

In addition to the course fees of £ 450 there are assessment fees for the three units which are
payable in Term 1.

Unit 101 = £20
Unit 102 = £44
Unit 103 = £44

You may be eligible for a fee remission if you're claiming eligible benefits or on a low wage. Our staff will confirm this when you complete your initial assessment before enrolling.

What can this course lead to

The successful learner can progress onto Signature Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language.
