Total Hours: 20 (10 hours for K101 and 10 hours for T101)

What will I be learning?

Signature Level 1 Award in Deaf Awareness and Communication is designed to provide introductory knowledge and skills for enhancing communication with deaf people.

In this qualification, the term ‘deaf’ relates to all of the following: deaf, deafened, deafblind, hard of hearing, Deaf BSL users, Deaf visually impaired, blind hearing impaired and people with congenital deaf-blindness.

Does the course lead to a qualification?

Yes – on completion of two units

K101 – Deaf and Deafblind Awareness

T101 – Communication Tactics with Deaf and Deafblind people.

Who is the course for?

For learners who wish to acquire basic knowledge of how deafness and deaf-blindness affect communication

And also wish to acquire basic skills to facilitate basic communication with deaf people.

What do I need to bring?

Paper and pen

Ring binder for notes and handouts

Are there any additional costs?

Assessment fees for each unit is £29 = 2 x £29 = £58

T101 unit will be assessed towards the end the course at the tutor’s discretion

K101 unit paper based exam will take place on Monday 6th July  2020 at 6.30pm

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?

You will receive ongoing feedback from your tutor and peers.  An Individual Learning Progress Log will be completed at the end of each session.

Can I have help in the class?

Learner Support

If you need support to learn, for example, a communicator, large print, personal care, specific equipment, or extra time, let us know. We will work with you to identify what you need and how we can best support you.

Learner Support Fund

If you are struggling to pay your exam fees or have a disability and need help to pay for transport to the course, we may be able to help you. Ask the centre staff or your tutor for more information and an application form. We have a small fund available to help learners who are experiencing genuine hardship. You are advised to apply as soon as you can.

From the city centre head towards Kedleston Road along King Street and Garden Street. At the 'Five Lamps' traffic lights on Garden Street you will see a sign for the Rycote Centre, turn left down Parker Street then turn right and the Centre is on the right hand side, parking is on the street and the main entrance is through the Social Service's car park. The Centre can also be accessed from Kedleston Road - opposite the Polish Club - but there is no parking at this entrance other than on Kedleston Road 01332 717930 or 717924

Bus Routes:

Allestree Bus, Trent Barton, and No. 6, Notts and Derby University bus during University term time.
