 What will I be learning?

This qualification is designed to teach learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. They will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL. There will be 65 guided learning hours in the classroom.

The qualification specification has been designed using the UK Occupational Language Standards 2010 at Level 1

Does the course lead to a qualification?

Yes, after successful completion of three units.

BSL 101  Introduction to BSL                      

BSL 102  Conversational BSL

BSL  103  Communicate in BSL about Everyday Life.

The tutor reserves the right to determine whether the candidate has reached competency standards which includes having sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.

Who is the course for?

Level 1 Award in British Sign Language can be taken without any previous BSL experience. This qualification allows learners to gain basic skills and confidence in understanding BSL as well as producing it.

What do I need to bring?

Paper and pen

A ring binder for notes and handouts.

Are there any additional costs?

Yes. There are assessment fees for the three units which are payable in Term 1.

£22 + £37 + £37 = £96 in total

Exam dates in 2019/2020 are as follows:-

101 unit on Wednesday  23rd October 2019 at 6pm

102 unit on Wednesday 11th March  2020 at 6pm

103 unit on Wednesday 29th April  2020 at 6pm

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?

You will receive ongoing feedback from your tutor and peers.  An Individual Learning Progress Log will be completed at the end of each session.

Can I have help in the class?

Learner Support

If you need support to learn, for example, a support worker with BSL skills, a volunteer with BSL skills, large print, personal care, specific equipment, or extra time, let us know. We will work with you to identify what you need and how we can best support you.

Learner Support Fund

If you are struggling to pay your exam fees or have a disability and need help to pay for transport to the course, we may be able to help you. Ask the centre staff or your tutor for more information and an application form. We have a small fund available to help learners who are experiencing genuine hardship. You are advised to apply as soon as you can.

Progression within DALS

The successful learner can progress onto Signature Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language.

The learner can also enrol onto Deaf Awareness and Deafblind awareness courses.

On completion of this course, you could progress to:

Study BSL at Level 2 within DALS

Then study BSL Level 3 up to Level 6 and train to become an interpreter.
