What will I be learning?

You will learn:

  • about classifiers in British Sign Language
  • about syntax in BSL
  • how to use role-shift

The main aim of the course is:

  • For previous learners to expand their knowledge on BSL grammar, building on what they have learnt at Level 1 and preparing for the pre-course assessment to do Level 2 BSL.

Does the course lead to a qualification?

No. It doesn’t lead to a qualification but learners who complete the course will be given a certificate of attendance.

What does the course involve?

  • There will be 8 hours in the classroom
  • Looking at resources on derbyLearn

Who is the course for?

  • The course is aimed at learners who have sign language skills.
  • It will be a good foundation for those learners wanting to take the Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language.

What do I need to bring?

You may want pen and paper if you want to take any notes.

Are there any additional costs?

  • This is a free course
  • There are no additional costs.

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?

At DALS, we use an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set and review targets and provide feedback, enabling continual reflection and evaluation throughout the course. Learners will also receive verbal and/or written feedback on marked work. Learners will use their ILP to help track and monitor their own progress towards set goals, to support personal development and achievement.

There is no formal exam, although there is continual evaluation throughout the course.

Can I have help in the class?

At enrolment, it is important that you tell us if you have a learning difficulty or disability and require support. Learners declaring a support need will be referred for an assessment. If an enhanced support need is confirmed, a Support Package will be offered, to assist your progress in your learning and development, specific to your assessed needs.
